Opening Ceremony of the 2nd Phase of the Mondego Mobility System
Metrobus connections to Coimbra-B and Praça da República give new impetus to mobility in the Coimbra region
The opening ceremony of the 2nd Phase of the Mondego Mobility System took place today at Estação Nova, in Coimbra, marking the launch of the Metrobus connections to Coimbra-B and Praça da República. This was a highly significant milestone for the region, attended by the Minister for Infrastructure and Housing, the Secretary of State for Mobility, and hundreds of guests who joined this important stage of the project.
With these new connections now in operation, the Mondego Mobility System takes another decisive step towards the implementation of a modern, efficient and sustainable public transport network, bringing communities even closer together and strengthening connections between Coimbra, Miranda do Corvo and Lousã.
The new connections are already transforming mobility across the region, providing frequent services and making it easier to reach different areas of the city and the municipalities covered by the system.
In this new phase, the system now comprises 37 stations, served by modern, sustainable vehicles designed to provide a comfortable and accessible experience for all passengers. This marks a new reality for mobility in the region, placing Coimbra and the municipalities involved at the forefront of the transition towards more efficient public transport solutions that are ready for the future.
The growth and consolidation of the Metrobus reflect the success of a project that is earning citizens’ trust and establishing itself as a benchmark for sustainable mobility in Portugal.
Highlighting the project's positive impact, the Minister for Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, stressed the potential of the Mondego Mobility System as an example for the future, stating that “Metro Mondego must have the ability to have a positive ripple effect. We want to build more metros like this in other locations along the High-Speed Rail network.”
