Starting on Wednesday, 1 July, Cruz de Celas Square will enter a new phase of transformation with the progress of the urban section works of the Metrobus Avenida Aeminium – Pediatric Hospital, promoted by Infraestruturas de Portugal. This stage involves a temporary reorganisation of traffic, essential to continue a project that will significantly improve the city’s mobility.

The image shows the road circuit scheme during this phase of the intervention, which is expected to last two and a half months, coinciding with the school holiday period.

The works will focus on the lower section of Rua Gomes Freire, preventing vehicle access from Cruz de Celas Square to Avenida Afonso Henriques. The alternative route will be via Rua Bernardo de Albuquerque and Rua das Parreiras, where the traffic direction will be fully reversed along the entire street.

Consequently, during this period it will not be possible to access Rua Bernardo de Albuquerque from Avenida Afonso Henriques via Rua das Parreiras. The alternative route will be via Rua Henriques Seco, Rua Augusto Rocha, and Cruz de Celas Square.

During this phase of the works, due to the impossibility of using Rua Gomes Freire, those coming down Rua Bernardo de Albuquerque will be allowed to turn left onto Rua das Parreiras, thus enabling access to Avenida Afonso Henriques.

The current SMTUC bus stop located on Rua Gomes Freire will be relocated to the existing stop next to José Falcão Secondary School.

Pedestrian circulation will remain guaranteed, as will access for emergency vehicles.

This phase of the project is part of a set of essential interventions for the modernisation of Cruz de Celas Square. The works include the renewal of water and drainage networks, the construction of the dedicated Metrobus corridor, road repaving, improvements to public lighting, and the reorganisation of signage and safety systems. The intervention also aims to achieve better urban integration, promoting a more functional, safer space adapted to current mobility needs.

To facilitate adaptation to this new phase of works and minimise potential traffic impacts, the use of navigation apps such as Waze or Google Maps is recommended. These platforms already include information on temporary changes, allowing drivers to choose the most suitable routes in real time.
