Santa Clara Bridge closed to traffic

As part of the construction work on the urban section of the Metrobus Alto de São João – Portagem, under the responsibility of Infraestruturas de Portugal, it is planned to build a new roundabout in the Largo da Portagem area. In view of the reduction in intervention phases and consequently the duration of restrictions on traffic in this area and to guarantee the completion of the work during the school break period, the Santa Clara Bridge will be closed to traffic, starting on July 24th. until August 30, 2024.

The image shows the scheme of alternative road circuits during the intervention, which involves diverting traffic through the Rainha Santa Bridge and the Açude Bridge. Pedestrian circulation on the bridge will not be affected.


Thus, road traffic in the direction of Portagem – Santa Clara will be carried out along Avenida Fernão Magalhães, Casa do Sal, Ponte Açude, Avenida da Guarda Inglesa, ending at Avenida João das Regras. Alternatively, it can also be accessed through Avenida Emídio Navarro, Avenida da Lousã, Avenida Urbano Duarte, Ponte Rainha Santa Isabel and Avenida Inês de Castro.

The opposite direction (Santa Clara – Toll) will be covered by the same routes.

Some SMTUC services will be relocated from Avenida Emídio Navarro to Avenida de Conímbriga, namely the stops on the following lines 12, 13, 14, 14T, 17, 20, 21, 22F, 32, 18, 23, 31, 43, 47, 48 and 49. The remaining stops will remain on Avenida Emídio Navarro. For this purpose, parking on Avenida de Conímbriga, adjacent to the Praça das Cortes Parking Lot and part of the Coimbra University Stadium, will be reserved for the installation of the stops to be relocated from Avenida Emídio Navarro.

The work to be carried out is as follows:
- Installation of water mains and sanitation pipelines;
- Construction of drainage and telecommunications infrastructure;
- Urban integration, including the construction of the future roundabout in the Portagem area;
- Refurbishment of public lighting.

Considering the various constraints inherent to the work in progress, within the scope of the Metrobus infrastructure construction works, it is recommended to use navigation aids, such as Waze and Google Maps, where the constraints are inserted, thus being able to always know the best route in real time.
