Starting Wednesday, July 16th, Avenida Fernão Magalhães will enter a new phase of construction on the urban Metrobus section and the renovation of the Águas de Coimbra underground infrastructure, continuing the ongoing work.
The traffic restrictions implemented during this phase of the work, limiting vehicle traffic to one reversible lane, were planned to coincide with the city's usual period of reduced traffic due to the interruption of school activities and will be lifted before the start of the new school year. This measure involves a temporary reorganization of traffic, as shown in the diagram.
The reduction of traffic to a single lane is justified for safety reasons, given the depth of the ditches and their central location within the roadway. Alternate traffic should be regulated by traffic lights.
The existing SMTUC bus stops on Fernão de Magalhães Avenue will remain in their current locations, and pedestrian traffic will remain protected, as will the movement of emergency vehicles.
The ongoing work consists of renovating water and drainage networks, constructing technical communication and energy infrastructure for the Metrobus system, building a dedicated Metrobus channel, repaving the road, improving public lighting, and reorganizing signage and safety.
We appreciate all residents' understanding regarding these restrictions and urge them to comply with the temporary signage to ensure safety and proper execution of the work.
To facilitate adaptation to this new phase of work and minimize potential impacts on traffic, we recommend using navigation apps such as Waze or Google Maps. These platforms already include information about temporary changes, allowing drivers to choose the most appropriate routes in real time.
